Engine PCM and
Harness
Cut a hole in my newly
smoothed firewall in order to mount the engine computer. I chose
this location because the computer
itself
is located inside the truck where it will stay dry and won't be exposed
to engine heat. Only the connectors are in the engine
compartment,
close to where they need to be. I'm now concerned that this
placement will interfere with the A/C unit. It will be some time
until I'm ready to order that kit. I'll leave it here for now.
I then took the engine computer and harness down to
Fuel Injection Specialties in
San Antonio to modify the wiring harness to remove all
the connectors that I no longer require. In addition, they are
re-programmed the computer to eliminate VATS (vehicle
anti-theft) and emission controls (EGR, canister purge, catalytic
convertors, AIR, etc). Since the truck is a 1953, these aren't
required plus it cleans up the engine compartment, and
should improve performance. The PCM edit also eliminates speed
limiting, adjusts electric fan control (lowers temperature to 180), and
includes a mild performance tune. Here's a picture of the
re-worked harness and re-programmed computer. Nicely labeled so
it was a breeze to install.
